For Parents
This category is made specifically for divorced or divorcing parents who are worried about their teens. Advice for Parents covers specific things you can do to help your kids, from a teen's perspective. What You Can Do deals with those things we'd like you to know you can do to help us after the divorce. For those of you who have yet to divorce, and are simply planning, there's a whole page about How to Break the News, which is critical. In addition, for those who are already divorced, there's a page with advice about Keeping in Touch, which talks not only about the ways to stay in touch, but also provides tips about interacting with your child post divorce.
Want to see divorce from your child's perspective? Try reading How We're Feeling. I recently created a page that deals specifically with the role of lawyers in a divorce from a child's perspective, which you can find at The Law and Divorce. To get an idea of what your teen may be going through right now, the Perspectives page has videos from other teens' points of view. I highly recommend it. I also have a page of Links to other websites for parents which I also recommend. There's also Advice for Stepparents, which gives advice and resources for stepparents trying to get along better with their stepchild(ren).
As far as more general pages go, I have My Divorce Story, to give you a small, personal example of what teens go through. I also offer a way to Contact Me with any questions or comments that you may have. Want to know more about how this website came to be? Check out the well-named "The Website" article for more information. Although it's small, this section of the website is still growing, so please continue to check back for more resources.
Personally, one of the best things you can do to understand what your teen is dealing with is to check out the "Parents Divorcing" or "Parents Divorced" categories. They can help you see the divorce from your teen's perspective.
In addition, I recently found an excellent resource for handling the divorce transition from a parent's perspective - Coping with Separation & Divorce: A Parenting Seminar. It's an online handbook that does its best to walk parents through the process both from a child's view and helping them transition, and I highly recommend reading it. You can find the COPE Handbook here.
Thanks so much for visiting! I hope you find what you're looking for.
